When winter comes and brings flu season with it, you may find yourself in a situation in which you think you may have contracted this potentially serious viral infection. However, if you are like most people, you may not know what you should do when you first start to feel like you have a bout of the flu. Many people tend to do nothing and simply try to carry on or take a few days off from work at most. Before you make these same mistakes if you come down with the flu, get to know some of the steps that you should take and be sure that you are taking the best possible care of yourself.
Go To Urgent Care Or Your Doctor's Office As Soon As You Fall Ill
While there is no cure for the flu, there are treatments. For those treatments to be effective, though, you will need to begin taking them within 48 hours of the onset of your symptoms. Otherwise, taking the medications will not be effective, and your flu symptoms will be far worse than they would have been otherwise.
If you cannot get in to see your primary care physician because it is after hours or the weekend, the urgent care clinic is your best bet. They will be able to assess your symptoms and prescribe you with the immediate treatments that you may need like oseltamivir. Additionally, the doctors at the urgent care clinic can recommend over-the-counter and home treatments and ensure that your symptoms are not so severe that you need hospitalization or IV fluids.
Try To Isolate Yourself As Much As Possible
When you determine that you do indeed have the flu, the best thing you can do is to try to isolate yourself entirely from other people as much as possible. If you live alone, this should be fairly easy for you.
However, if you have a family, you will want to try to stay in one room away from them as much as possible. If you do interact with your family members, be careful to keep a distance of at least a few feet and try not to breathe directly on them.
Obviously, if you have to go to such great lengths not to infect your family members at home, you should not go to work or out and about (unless, of course, you need to go to the doctor). Until you have been fever-free for at least 24 hours, you should stay home and recuperate.
